Is there a free tool to convert WebM to MP4?
I am new to Windows 11.
Recently downloaded a few WEBM videos that I need to share with someone, but their device doesn't support WEBM files. I’m using a Windows 11 PC and would like to convert these WEBM files to MP4 format for better compatibility.
I’ve done some basic research and found a few tools and online converters, but I’m concerned about quality loss and safety with online tools. I prefer a free solution that can convert webm to mp4 in batch at once and keeps the original quality intact. Does Windows 11 have any built-in tools for this purpose?

Windows 11 does not come with a dedicated built-in video converter. However, it includes the Clipchamp app, which is a video editor and can handle some video conversion tasks. While Clipchamp is primarily designed for editing, it allows exporting videos in MP4 format, which can serve as a basic conversion tool for certain scenarios.
Using Clipchamp to Convert WEBM to MP4:
- Open Clipchamp from the Start Menu. (If not installed, download it from the Microsoft Store for free.)
- Import the WEBM file into a new project by clicking the Import Media button.
- Drag the file into the timeline.
- Go to the Export button at the top-right corner and choose the desired resolution (e.g., 1080p or 720p). The exported file will be in MP4 format.
For more advanced or bulk conversion features, you need use the third-party webm to mp4 converter instead. - MaxineWatersCopper Contributor
I once converted WebM to MP4 without checking the settings and ended up with a grainy mess! Make sure you choose the right quality settings in your conversion tool. For most converters, aim for MP4 with H.264 encoding for good quality without massive file sizes. Most converters have preset options, so that should make things easier!

You can try the Windows Media Player first.

If you’ve got a whole bunch of WEBM files to convert, Clipchamp isn’t the best tool for converting WEBM to MP4. It’s designed for editing, not bulk converting, so you’ll be stuck dragging each file in one at a time. That gets old really quick. Since you’re working with a video editor, the process can be more time-consuming than a simple converter app that’s designed just for that.
While the basic version is free, certain features or export options are locked behind a paywall. If you’re looking for advanced functionalities, you might have to cough up some cash.

As for the question you asked about converting WEBM files to MP4 format, there are indeed several ways to do it, and you don't need to use any third-party tools. You can use some of the tools that come with Windows 11 to complete this task.
Although the "Photos" app is mainly used to view pictures and videos, it can actually perform simple video conversion operations. You can convert the file by following the steps below:
- Right-click the WEBM file, select "Open with" and select "Photos".
- The video will open in the "Photos" app, click the **"Edit Image"** button in the upper right corner of the window (it looks like a pencil icon).
- In the editing interface, select "Save a copy“, and it will automatically convert to MP4 format and save it as a new file.
This method is simple and convenient, but it does not support batch conversion. It can only convert one by one, which is suitable for a small number of files.

Although Windows 11 does not directly provide a tool to batch convert WEBM to MP4, you can do it through the command line tool FFmppeg. This is a powerful video processing tool. Although it is not native to Windows 11, it can be operated through the command line to perform batch conversion without affecting the video quality.
- First, download and install FFmppeg (there is no official installation package, but it can be downloaded through the Windows Package Manager or the official website).
- After installing FFmppeg, put the WEBM files in a folder.
- Open the command prompt (as an administrator) and go to the folder containing the WEBM files.
Use the following command to batch convert:
perl for %i in (*.webm) do FFmppeg-i "%i" "%~ni.mp4"
This command will batch convert all WEBM files to MP4 format and retain the original file name.
Although FFmppeg is not native to Windows, it supports batch conversion and maintains video quality, so it is a very practical method. - BradleylyCopper Contributor
There are several benefits for converting WebM to MP4 on Windows, especially for compatibility, flexibility, and file management.
MP4 is one of the most widely supported video formats across various devices and platforms (smartphones, tablets, PCs, gaming consoles, TVs, etc.), while WebM is more commonly used for web streaming and may not be supported by all media players and devices.
MP4 offers a better balance of video quality and compression, making it ideal for sharing over the internet or streaming. It’s often more compatible with social media platforms and video-sharing websites, which might not support WebM files.
In short, WebM to MP4 converter on Windows makes your videos more compatible, easier to manage, and better suited for playback across different devices and platforms.

Converting WebM to MP4 on a Windows computer can definitely be useful sometimes. But depend on how you do the conversion, you might end up with a video that looks a bit worse than the original. This often happens when you use a lower bitrate or a less effective conversion method. If you’ve got a killer WebM file, you want to keep that quality, right? Sometimes the converted MP4 file can be significantly larger or smaller than the original WebM. If it’s bigger, that’s a storage killer—especially if you’re low on space. If it’s smaller, you might be sacrificing quality, which circles back to the first point. It's like having a sweet dessert; you want to enjoy it without overindulging!
Depending on your computer's specs and the software you use, converting files can take some time. If you’re in a rush, waiting around can feel like watching paint dry. If you're dealing with a super lengthy WebM file, that time can stretch from a couple of minutes to something more frustrating.
