iCloud for Outlook Incorrect Username or Password
New Update for February 2023
The latest Microsoft update broke iCloud again. While the October 2022 update above still works, this update streamlines it slightly by cutting out most reboots (kill all iCloud processes before the old step 9).
The full list:
- Run iCloud setup as the logged-in iCloud user.
- Un-check the "Contacts and Calendars with Outlook" option, apply and close.
- Run Outlook, go to File / Options / Add-ins / Manage COM Add-ins / Go...
- Disable the iCloud Outlook addin, close Outlook.
- Run Outlook with "Run as Administrator", disable iCloud addin as per 3&4 above.
- Keeping Outlook open, /remove/ the iCloud addin, still as Administrator.
- Close Outlook (may need to reboot; probably not -- feel free to try both ways).
- Run Task Manager, close all iCloud processes if any are running (may need click "more details" and scroll down).
- Run iCloud setup with "Run as Administrator", enter password, confirm via 2fp
- If iCloud won't run, then it needs to be updated as part of the Windows update, and requires a reboot.
- In which case, reboot, and repeat from step 8 above.
- Check the "Contacts and Calendars with Outlook" option, apply and close.
- Run iCloud setup as the logged-in iCloud user, enter password and confirm if needed.
- Check the "Contacts and Calendars with Outlook" option, apply and close.
- Run Outlook as administrator, go to File / Options / Add-ins / Manage COM Add-ins / Go...
- Manually add the iCloud Outlook Add-in from the file in %ProgramData%, typically:
- C:\ProgramData\Apple Inc\iCloud\Outlook\aplzod32.dll
- Close options.
- The iCloud outlook add-in toolbar icon will say "wrong password" instead of "refresh".
- This is fine because Outlook was started as administrator and is using the wrong credential cache.
- Close outlook.
- Re-open Outlook as the logged-in user and it should now be happy and show "refresh".
One thing I have found most helpful was checking my phone Calendar > Calendars screen (at the bottom of your iPhone calendar between Today and Inbox) to re-verify the login information.

Once this was done, syncing started working immediately.

I cannot see "Verify Account Information" anywhere on my iCloud Calendars. I also tried adding a new Calendar in case. Is there another switch elsewhere perhaps? I am using ios18 with iphone 12pro.
From about a week ago my Outlook 2016 calendars & contacts stopped syncing with my iPhone. I had several sessions with Apple support and they finally concluded that this was due to Microsoft "no longer supporting the basic authentication." I find that a bit odd.
On reading your message I'm guessing that you are syncing successsfully so Apple support's conclusion is incorrect.
I repaired Outlook, reinstalled icloud for windows multiple times, disabled and renabled the iCloud Outlook addin, without success. Icloud for windows sadly failed on "Calendars and Contacts" with the message "Incorrect Username Or Password. Your setup couldn't start because your username or password is incorrect. Go to icloud for windows sign out and sign back in. "
I know that my username and password are both correct.
Any help is appreciated.
- jmcrawfSep 28, 2024Brass ContributorMy calendars and contacts are still happily synchronizing. Outlook did lose its connection the other day, so the "Refresh" button on the iCloud section of the Home ribbon turned into "Go online", but once I did that, it was back to normal. I'd say iCloud does still work with Outlook.
Uninstalling and reinstalling is a very inconvenient way to fix a sync issue, and obviously /really/ inconvenient if it doesn't work. Did you try the steps and advice on the first page of this thread? So far that has worked on all the problem systems in our company.- rayb100Sep 30, 2024Copper Contributor
Thanks for your messages. I think I should explain my issue in more detail, maybe it could be of further help. On my iphone12 pro my apple id is "example at hotmail dot com" (obvs not the real one)
In my Outlook 2016 I have the following: a work email, an icloud email (identical to my appleid except that it's icloud) "example at icloud dot com" and iCloud Archive.
Over a week ago, something which regrettably I cannot recall, happened in my "outlook 2016" whereby a message popped up notifying me that my calendar and contacts have been backed up on icloud. That's when my icloud calendars and contacts stopped syncing with iphone and vice-versa. I called Apple and we went through uninstalling and reinstalling Icloud For Windows on my Win10 PC, at least a couple of times. Disabling & renabling the "icloud outlook addin" on outlook. And multiple reboots to add. On another day my call was passed onto a senior Apple tech who got me to generate a 16 letter appleid password. (That's xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx). I believe I needed that to reinstall "example at icloud dot com". I might be wrong.
Apple finally gave up citing it as a microsoft authentication issue and that everyone is in the same boat. Obviously that is not correct since both you and SamM1095 are still merrily syncing data.
Saying that I am confused by all this is an understatement.
I did follow your suggestions in this thread but clearly I didn't do it right.
So I will now backup my calendar and contacts to icloud again and also export and download them onto my pc. I will also uninstall icloud for windows. What do I do with my "example at icloud dot com" on my outlook? Do I need to remove it from Outlook? (presumably that's right click and remove?
After that do I need to reinstall the above in a paticular way?
Many thanks for your help.

rayb100 If you don't see "Verify Account" on your iPhone > Calendar screen, then the account is already verified.
The only other option then is to follow the steps in this thread to uninstall iCloud to remove it from Outlook and your computer, and then https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pktq5699m62?hl=en-US&gl=US and reinstall it all. When you sign out of iCloud to do this, choose "Save a local copy of your calendars/contacts" (I did at least) or if you want, use Outlook to fist export them the calendar, and then your contacts to local files for a backup. Once iCloud is reinstalled and connected again, everything will sync back up.
