How do I activate and upgrade to the Pro edition on a new computer running the Windows 11 Preview?

My new computer came pre-installed with the Windows 11 Insider Preview, and I need to activate the system. I would like to upgrade from the current version to the official Pro edition. Could you please provide specific steps and any important considerations?

Before making significant changes, back up your important files to an external drive or cloud storage.

Upgrading to the Pro edition while running a Windows 11 Insider Preview is very similar to the standard retail process, though it requires ensuring your current Preview build is properly activated first. Here is the step-by-step guide to upgrading your edition.

Step 1: Verify Your Current Activation

Before upgrading, your current "Home" or "Core" Preview build must be activated.

    • Go to Settings > System > Activation.

    • Ensure the Activation state says Active.

Step 2: Choose Your Upgrade Path

Option A: If you bought a retail key or have one from a previous Windows 10/11 Pro license:

    • In the Activation settings, select Change product key.
    • Enter your 25-character Pro key.
    • Click Next. Your PC will communicate with Microsoft servers, download the necessary Pro-specific features (this usually takes 5–10 minutes), and then prompt you to Restart.

Option B: Purchase via the Microsoft Store

    • In the Activation settings, expand the Upgrade your edition of Windows section.
    • Click Open Store and purchase the "Windows 11 Pro Upgrade." Once the transaction is complete, click Install/Upgrade. This will link a digital license to your Microsoft Account.

Step 3: Troubleshooting the "Preview" Hurdle

Sometimes the Insider Preview builds can be finicky with edition changes. If the "Change product key" method fails with an error (like 0xc004f050), use the "Generic Key" method to force the switch:

    • Disconnect from the Internet (turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet).
    • Go to

Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.

    • Enter the Windows 11 Pro Generic Key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

    • The system will "fake" an upgrade to Pro. It will restart and show "Windows 11 Pro."

    • Reconnect to the Internet and enter your actual purchased Pro key (or sign in to your Microsoft Account) to activate it permanently.

    I hope this will help.

You need a Windows Pro key. It will automatically upgrade to Pro when the key is provided.

  • If your current version is Windows 11 Home Insider Preview, you must activate it with proper license. You can ask the seller about the license.

You can also refer this support article to locate your product key:

Once you've Windows 11 Home activated, you can purchase Pro edition at around 100 USD from Settings > System > Activation > Open in Store (next to upgrade).

In case if you've Pro edition key, you can directly upgrade using steps in this guide:
