Edge Updates Keep Forcing Bing - Overriding User's Search Engine Choice

I need to bring attention to a serious issue that's affecting many Edge users: automatic updates are resetting our default search engine from Google (or other chosen providers) back to Bing without consent.

What's happening:

  • I deliberately set my default search engine to Google
  • After Edge updates, my choice is silently overridden back to Bing
  • This has happened multiple times now - it's not a one-time bug
  • No notification, no consent dialog, no option to preserve my settings

Why this matters: This isn't just annoying - it's about user autonomy and respect for our choices. When I configure my browser settings, I expect those preferences to persist. Silently changing them back feels like:

  • A violation of user trust
  • Anti-competitive behavior that leverages OS update mechanisms
  • The opposite of "user-first" design Microsoft claims to embrace

What should happen instead:

  • Updates should preserve ALL user-configured settings
  • If there's a technical reason settings can't persist, users should be notified and given a choice
  • Microsoft should respect that users deliberately chose a different search engine

I love many things about Edge, but this practice needs to stop. Users deserve control over their own browser configuration.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there an official response from Microsoft about why this keeps happening?
