Clicking zip files hang the Explorer

I use Windows 11 24H2 on an x86 computer, up to date on 2025-09-02.

Today the Explorer started getting hung by zip files:

  • Hovering over a .zip file name showed as file type ZIP
  • Clicking on the file name with either the left or right mouse button made Explorer showing the active-icon (rotating ring) ...
  • ... waiting for an action didn't help, the only way to get out was killing this Explorer instance.

To solve this issue ...

  • I read an article of Learn (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/4365421/windows-11-zipped-folders-files-immediately-crashe?page=1#answers) and tried generic actions - still the same behaviour of Explorer.
  • I performed https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd - deactivating all Services and all Auto Starts didn't help, same behaviour of Explorer.

As next action I removed in regedit the .zip key of Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\ - this resulted in zip files not showing an icon in Explorer anymore but hovering over the file name still showed "type: ZIP".  Therefore I removed the .zip key of Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Now hovering over the file name shows nothing anymore, but clicking still hangs Explorer.

To clarify: clicking on any file with another extension doesn't show this behaviour.

In can't find hints in Windows:

  • the event manager shows an "Application Hang" (code 1002), nothing else.
  • in the control panel -> System and Security ->  Security and Maintenance -> Maintenance I see the corresponding problems but without any Technical Details.

Sounds like a simple question: how can I find out what gets active when clicking on a .zip filename in Explorer?

    SOLVED:

Just after finishing this post I reinstalled 7zip which I uninstalled in earlier actions.

What a surprise: clicking on a .zip file name doesn't hang Explorer anymore. After setting 7zip as default application for zip files I can look inside a file and I can expand it.

My conclusion: installing 7zip kicked out a mysterious setting, now the Windows processing of zip files is streamlined again.
