Can I upgrade my Windows 11 license from home to pro without reinstalling?
I have an ASUS tower PC about 2 years old. I have been happily running Windows 10 Pro from a license I owned previously. Now that Windows 10 is no longer supported, Microsoft has "upgraded" me to Windows 11 Pro, overwriting Win 10, but is unlicensed and so limits my Win 11 functionality. For example- I can't change many of the Windows settings. I am blind and need to change a number of settings just to use my computer. My desktop is constantly prompting me to provide a Win 11 Pro license key.
I tried using the Win 10 Pro license key but that didn't work. I tried installing Win 10 and 11 dual boot, but my PC doesn't allow dual boot. The ASUS PC includes a license of Windows 11 Home, but I can't use it with the installed Windows 11 Pro. I could install Win 11 Home, but that would start from scratch and lose some of my local data and put my settings back to default, which in my case would be ausability nightmare.
The easy way out is to just get a new license for Win 11 Pro. Then Windows and the settings would just stay the way they are, and enable all of my apps,data and settings.
- To keep this from getting too expensive, can I buy an upgrade license from Win 11 Home to Pro? If so, can I use it without reinstalling Windows 11?
- If that doesn't work, can I downgrade my installation of Win 11 Pro to Win 11 Home without reinstalling?
- If neither of the above is possible, I’ll have to just buy a new license of Windows 11 Pro. Where do I get that? Are there any options to keep the cost down to that of an upgrade rather than a net new license?

Go to Settings > System > Activation. In the "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, you'll find an option to open the Microsoft Store and purchase the upgrade directly . This is the official upgrade path.

I would try to avoid reinstalling anything if the current Windows 11 Pro installation is already set up with all of your accessibility settings and applications working the way you need them.
From what I understand, Windows 11 Pro can be activated without reinstalling Windows. If Pro is already installed, you should normally be able to go through the Activation settings and enter a valid Windows 11 Pro product key. That would be much less disruptive than changing the edition or starting over with Windows 11 Home.
I also wouldn't recommend trying to force the installation back from Pro to Home just to use the OEM license that came with the ASUS. Edition changes in that direction aren't generally a simple in-place switch, and in this particular situation a reinstall could create much more work because you'd have to rebuild your accessibility configuration and application environment.
Before buying anything, though, I'd check the exact activation status under Settings → System → Activation and also see whether Windows reports that the device has a digital license or an embedded Home key. If the old Windows 10 Pro license was legitimately yours, it may also be worth checking whether it can still be transferred or reactivated rather than immediately purchasing another license.
If you do end up needing a Pro license, I'd stick with Microsoft or a reputable authorized retailer rather than one of those extremely cheap product-key sites. Saving a few dollars isn't particularly useful if the key later turns out to be invalid.
Given the accessibility issue, I'd definitely back up your important data before making any edition or licensing changes. But I would start by trying to activate the existing Windows 11 Pro installation, rather than reinstalling Windows.
Yes, you have to go into settings to add new microsoft key number and it will upgrade. This is how I did mine. For step by step directions, go onto whichever search engine you use and ask for directions on how to do it, sorry I couldnt give the details.
