Back up USB?

Just had the bit where my desktop wouldn't shut down, so I had no choice but to switch it off. Then it wouldn't move from the start screen on boot up, it eventually did come back, so I scanned for virus's, this turned up nothing. So now I want someone to explain how to make a back up or something that will restart my computer to as it was if it happened again, in simple terms please.

If you want to be able to restore your PC to a working state in case this happens again, you can use Windows’ built-in backup and recovery tools. Here’s the simplest way:

    1. Create a System Restore Point
This lets you roll back system files and settings without touching your personal files.

    • Press Windows + S, type Create a restore point, and open it
    • Select your system drive (usually C:) → click Configure → turn on System protection
    • Click Create, give it a name, and save

    2. Make a System Image Backup

This is a complete copy of Windows, your settings, and programs.

    • Go to Control Panel > Backup and Restore (Windows 7)
    • Select Create a system image on the left
    • Choose an external drive to store the backup and follow the prompts

    3. Create a Recovery Drive (USB)
So you can boot into recovery tools if Windows won’t start.

    • Press Windows + S, type Create a recovery drive
    • Follow the wizard (check “Back up system files” for full recovery options)
