How to make an image transparent in Windows by removing background
I need to make the background of an image transparent on Windows 11. I've tried just deleting the background, but it always ends up white instead of transparent. What's the right way to do this using built-in Windows tools? I don't want to download any paid software if I can avoid it.
I've also heard that PowerPoint has a "Set Transparent Color" tool that works for simple solid-color backgrounds (like a white logo background) . Has anyone tried that to make an image transparent in Windows? Any other free methods or built-in Windows options I'm missing? I'd prefer not to use Photoshop if I can help it, but I'm open to suggestions.

If you have Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or other Office apps installed, you can use their built-in background removal tool. Here is how you can use Microsoft Office to make an image transparent, described in my own words.
Method 1: The "Set Transparent Color" Tool
This is the fastest method, but it only works well on images with a simple, solid-color background, like a company logo on a white square.
How it works: You manually select one specific color in your image, and the tool makes every single pixel of that exact color invisible.
The Process: Select your image, go to the Picture Format tab, click Color, and then choose Set Transparent Color. Your cursor will change into a pen, and you simply click on the background color you want to remove.
Method 2: The "Remove Background" Tool
This is the more powerful, AI-driven tool if you want to make an image transparen. It is designed for complex images like photographs where the subject and background have many different colors and soft edges.
How it works: The tool automatically tries to detect the main subject of your photo. It then marks the area it thinks is the background in a purple or magenta color to show you what it will delete.
The Process: Select the image, go to the Picture Format tab, and click Remove Background. You can then use the options "Mark Areas to Keep" and "Mark Areas to Remove" to manually refine the selection by drawing lines on the parts the tool missed or accidentally selected. Once you are happy, click Keep Changes.

You can use Paint 3D, which comes pre-installed on Windows 10 and 11, to make an image transparent . It is a completely free and effective tool for removing backgrounds, especially when compared to the classic Paint application.
The key to making a background transparent in Paint 3D is using its "Magic Select" tool, which intelligently identifies the main subject of your photo. Once the tool has isolated your subject, you can delete the original background. The final, crucial step is to save your work as a PNG file, as this is the format that preserves the transparency.
💡 Things to Keep in Mind
The Final Result: After following these steps, you will have successfully used Paint 3D to make an image transparent, leaving you with a cutout of your subject that you can place on any other background .
Limitations: While Paint 3D is a great free tool, its "Magic Select" feature can sometimes struggle with very complex edges, like fine hair or fur, and may require significant manual refinement. It also isn't designed for editing multiple images in a batch.
