How to Convert RAF to JPG taken with Fujifilm Camera in Windows 10?

I've recently started using a Fujifilm camera and discovered it saves images in RAF format, which I find challenging to work with for quick sharing and editing. I'm looking for some guidance on converting RAF files (RAW format used by Fujifilm cameras) to JPG on my Windows 10 PC.

My goal is to find a free RAR to JPG converter app, so I can easily view and edit them on my Windows 10 computer. I've worked with JPG files before but am not familiar with the steps for handling RAF files, especially in this context. I’m not sure where to start or which software might handle this best without losing image quality.

If anyone has experience with converting RAF files to JPG, I’d love to hear your recommendations. Ideally, I’m looking for a free solution that’s reliable for large batches and user-friendly, as I’m still learning my way around image conversion software.

Regards,

Greg

Do you know the downside of using the Windows Photos app and RAW image extension to convert RAF files (those lovely RAW images in Fuji cameras) to JPG? The biggest bummer for me was how basic the conversion options are. You can't tweak settings like compression quality or color profiles when saving as JPG. I prefer having control over how my images look, but with this method, you’re stuck just doing a simple save after printing. It’s like hitting the fast-forward button on the good stuff!

Before you start converting RAF files to JPG on Windows 10, make sure to back up your RAF files. If something goes wrong during the conversion, you don’t want to lose your original images. RAF files often carry specific color profiles that might get lost when converting. Check that your software supports color profiles—this can affect how your JPGs look.

If you're looking for something quick and easy, the Photos app in Windows 10 doesn’t natively support RAF files, but you can use the Windows Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store:

    • Install the extension, then you can view RAW files in the Photos app.
    • While you can’t convert directly in the app, you can view and use the Print option to save as JPG (this is a roundabout method and might require a few extra clicks).

Let’s talk about using dcraw to convert your RAF files from a Fujifilm camera to JPG on Windows 10. While it’s a go-to tool for many photographers, it’s not without its quirks and downsides that you should keep in mind. Sometimes the converted JPGs might not look quite as good as you expect. While dcraw does a good job, it might not fully utilize the potential of your RAW files in terms of dynamic range and detail.

dcraw (Digital Camera RAW).  This is an free open-source command-line tool used for decoding and processing RAW image files from various digital cameras, including formats like RAF (Fujifilm), CR2 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), and many others. Developed by Dave Coffin, dcraw provides basic processing of RAW files, converting them to more accessible formats like JPG, JPEG or PNG.

Below is a basic command to convert a RAF file to a JPG format:

    dcraw -c image.raf | mabick convert - image.jpg

In short, dcraw is a great free RAF to JPG converter for quick, scriptable conversions and for developers looking to integrate basic RAW processing into larger workflows

Converting RAF files to JPG on Windows 10 can be a bit tricky if you're not familiar with the right methods. I've had my fair share of mishaps while dealing with RAW formats. As i know, not all image viewers support RAF files. Trying to open or convert them with basic apps like Paint or older versions of Windows Photo Viewer may lead to failures. Stick to specialized software.

If you’re just dragging and dropping RAF files to convert them to JPG without checking settings, you might end up losing image quality. Always look for options that let you adjust the output quality.

To fully work with RAF files (such as editing or converting them), you may still need specialized software, such as:

    1. Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop: These are paid options but offer advanced RAW editing and conversion.
    2. Capture One Express for Fujifilm: A free software specifically for Fujifilm users, offering RAW processing and export to JPG.

If you only need to convert RAF to JPG without complex editing, third-party tools like also offer conversion capabilities and work well on Windows 10.

By default, Windows 10 can not open RAF files natively in the Photos app or File Explorer. However, Microsoft offers a RAW Image Extension that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Once installed, this extension allows you to view thumbnails and previews of RAF files directly in File Explorer and open them in the Photos app.

You can also convert fuji raf file to jpeg free with the RAW image extension from Microsoft Store.

RAF is a popular RAW image format adopted by Fujifilm cameras. With the latest Windows 10 update, you can easily open and view RAF images with the Photos app. If you want to convert RAF to JPEG, then simple use the Save as menu from the Photos app.
