How can I create Windows 10 installation media for new PC?
Hi,
My new PC is arrived at home. Unfortunately, there is OS on it. I am going to run Windows 10 on this DIY PC. How to create Windows 10 installation media so I can install Windows 10 on it? What kind of things I should prepare to do this?
I am not a tech savvy. Please kindly suggest easy and user friendly solution for me.
Best Regards,
Rebecca
I had the same issue with my DIY PC—no OS. I used WonderISO appto create a Windows 10 installation USB, and it was super simple. Just a few clicks, and I was ready to install Windows—perfect for non-techies like me!

Before creating Windows 10 installation media for new PC, just a friendly reminder to back up any important files from your USB because it's getting wiped clean. If you're doing a fresh install, make sure you know your Windows 10 product key. If it's an upgrade from an older version of Windows, you might not need it—it usually auto-activates. It's a good idea to check that the PC you plan to install Windows 10 on meets the system requirements. Look for specs like the processor, RAM, and disk space.

You'll need a USB with at least 8 GB of space. Make sure to back up any important files because this process will wipe it clean. You'll need a stable internet connection to download the installer. Make sure you're on a Windows PC (Windows 7, 8, or 10) to create a Windows 10 installation media.
- Go to the Microsoft Download Page. Look for the "Download tool now" button and click it. This downloads the Media Creation Tool.
- Open the Media Creation Tool (just double-click that file you downloaded). When the terms of service pop up, go ahead and agree to that (it's standard stuff).
- You'll get a couple of options. You can either upgrade your current PC or create installation media for another PC. Since we're making a USB drive, pick“Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file).”
- Choose the language, edition of Windows 10, and architecture (x64 is usually what you want unless you're on an older system). Just check the box that says“Use the recommended options for this PC”if you're unsure.
- Next, click on "USB flash drive" as your media type. Select your USB from the list (make sure you pick the right one—don't wanna wipe the wrong drive).
- The tool will then download the Windows 10 files and create windows 10 installation media. This could take a while depending on your internet speed, so grab a snack!
- Once it's done, safely eject the USB drive. You're all set to use it to install Windows 10 on a different computer or reinstall it on the same one!

Rebeccacuo The Windows 10 Media Creation Tool is an official utility provided by Microsoft that allows users to download and create Windows 10 installation media for free. This tool is particularly useful for upgrading an existing Windows installation, performing a clean install, or creating bootable USB drives or ISO files to install Windows 10 on other devices.

Evierer One of the main cons of the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool is that it requires a stable and fast internet connection to download the Windows 10 ISO or installation files. Without this, the process can be slow or may even fail, especially when dealing with large updates or files. This can be a problem for users with limited or unreliable internet access.
Another drawback is that the tool doesn’t allow much customization when creating installation media. Users cannot adjust advanced installation settings like partitioning, choosing specific drivers, or including software in the installation process. For users who want more control over the installation process, this can be limiting.
Finally, the Media Creation Tool can occasionally encounter errors for making Windows 10 install media, such as problems with USB drives or incomplete downloads. Additionally, some users report difficulties with driver compatibility after installation, which may require further troubleshooting or updates post-install.
- AlyssanyCopper ContributorTo create windows 10 installation media. Pay attention to the selection for edition and architecture (32-bit vs 64-bit). If you accidentally select the wrong one, your installation won't work. Generally, most modern PCs should be using the 64-bit version, but if you’re unsure, just check your current setup beforehand.
Sometimes, running the Media Creation Tool without administrative privileges can lead to strange issues. Right-click the tool and select "Run as administrator" to avoid security prompts or access issues. It's like giving it VIP access to work its magic! - TarauiaCopper Contributor
Having a fast USB drive (3.0 or above) for making Windows 10 installation media is important because it directly impacts both the creation and installation process. A USB drive with higher read and write speeds will significantly reduce the time it takes to write the Windows 10 installation files to the drive during the media creation process. Slow drives can cause this step to take much longer, delaying your ability to use the installation media.
Additionally, when you use the USB drive to install Windows 10 on a computer, a faster drive will speed up the installation process itself. This is because the installation files will be read from the USB drive and transferred to your computer’s hard drive or SSD. Faster read speeds allow for quicker copying of large system files, leading to a smoother and shorter installation.
- Adriang-QCopper ContributorI agree with you.Using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool is an excellent way to get your installation media set up, whether for an upgrade or a fresh install. Just make sure to back up your data before performing any installations, especially if you're doing a clean install.
About creating Windows 10 installation media. You can create a bootable USB drive directly or download an ISO file that you can burn to a DVD later. This flexibility allows you to choose how you want to install Windows 10 based on your setup. - ClaireouiCopper Contributor
Rebeccacuo If you don't have a Windows PC or Mac, then buy a bootable USB/DVD from Microsoft, which comes with a product key for Windows 10. This is the easiest way to make a Windows 10 installation media USB without a computer.
I suggest borrowing a Windows laptop temporarily as there are so many free media creation tools available for PC. And the steps are very easy to follow. One thing to note is that make sure the partition scheme is UEFI, as it is more advanced than legacy BIOS.
