Workflow task list

Hi,

I'm aware that SharePoint Designer will be retired next year in April. A customer of mine wants to keep his SharePoint Office 365 site with a number of workflow tasks list. Will these task lists still be available or are these "task lists" also removed when SharePoint Designer retires ? Will I still be able to create a new SharePoint task list once SharePoint Designer is retired ?

Thank you,

Marc

Yes, you will still be able to create and use SharePoint Task Lists after SharePoint Designer is retired in April 2026. However, here are some points with what you need to know:

    1. SharePoint Designer Retirement & Workflow Impact

    • SharePoint Designer 2013 workflows (which many Task Lists depend on) will stop working in SharePoint Online after April 2026.
    • If your Task Lists rely on SharePoint 2010 or 2013 workflows, they will no longer function.
    • Modern Power Automate flows should be used as a replacement for SharePoint Designer workflows.

    2. Will Existing Workflow Task Lists Be Removed?

    • No, the lists themselves will not be deleted.
    • However, if these lists are connected to SharePoint 2010/2013 workflows, the workflows will stop running after April 2026.
    • Any manual tasks in the lists will still exist, but automated processes will break.

    3. Can You Still Create Task Lists?

    • Yes, you can still create new Task Lists in SharePoint Online.
    • However, Microsoft recommends using Microsoft Lists or Planner for modern task management instead.
    • You won’t be able to create new SharePoint Designer workflows after retirement.

    4. What Should You Do Now?

    • Audit workflows: Check if the Task Lists rely on SharePoint Designer workflows.
    • Migrate to Power Automate: Recreate workflows using Power Automate.
    • Consider Microsoft Lists or Planner: If workflows are heavily tied to tasks, switching to a modern tool like Microsoft Lists or Planner may be more future-proof.
