Word Templates in SPO Document center

Hello,

I have created a document center site in Sharepoint Online and some Libraries where my customer will store and create a large number of documents (primary Word documents).

I have added word templates (.dotx) as content types and added them to the Libraries so that the users can create new Word documets with the company template directly in the Library.

However, the template does not work in Word Online. All I get is a white document. If i choose the "Open in Word" option the document opens just fine in my locally installed Word 2016.

Is it known that Word Online has limitations when it comes to template files?
