What is the maximum length of a Check-In Comment in a SharePoint document library?
We are using SharePoint document libraries with versioning enabled and users provide comments when checking in documents. Is there a maximum number of characters allowed in the Check-In Comment field, and is this limit documented by Microsoft?
I tested this in SharePoint Online by checking in documents with progressively longer comments.
Result: The maximum length of a SharePoint document library Check-In Comment is 1,023 characters.
A few notes:
- The limit applies to the standard Check-In Comment field used during document check-in.
- The comment is stored with the document version and displayed in Version History.
- I was unable to find Microsoft documentation that explicitly states this limit.
- Based on testing, SharePoint accepts up to 1,023 characters for a Check-In Comment.
- If you need to store longer explanations or revision notes, consider using a separate Multiple Lines of Text metadata column instead of relying on Check-In Comments.
