Transition existing intranet to Hub sites

Can anyone provide information of migrating a Site Collection with 30-40 sub-sites into a new Hub site with member sites. You can’t associate Sub-Sites to a Hub that I can tell. Is there any way of promoting a sub-site into a new Communications or Team site?

What is the migration path for an existing set of Sites and sub-sites into a Hub structure?

Thanks,
Rob.

  • What we have done for a customer migrating a bunch o Team Sites (850) from SP 2010 to SPO is the following:
    - Design the best Information Architecture for those sites to be migrated: Hub Sites + Flat
    - Design and develop PnP templates for both the Hub Sites and Sites joined to the Hubs
    - Provision all the Sites in SPO
    - Migrate the subsites to the new Architecture

How did you migrate the subsites to the new Architecture? That is the key point.

      • We used Sharegate to do the migration, particularly the Sharegate PS cmdlets with the following setup:
        - We have the sites to be migrated in a CSV file where we did a mapping between the source site and the destination one
        - We wrote a PS Script where we read the sites to be migrated from the CSV and for each site to be migrated we used Sharegate PS cmdlets

Due tu the amount of sites to be migrated and also the amount of data, we configured Sharegate in 5 Virtual Machines so we could migrate in parallel as much as possible

Office 365 / SharePoint Online provides no built-in ways for you to promote sub-sites to site collections. I think the best migration approach is to design your new structure based on site collections and hub sites and then migrate relevant content to its new place within your redesigned structure. This also gives you the opportunity to cleanup / remove possibly outdated content. You will probably end up using a 3rd-party migration tool for this such as ShareGate.
