Team Site or Communication Site? Which one should I choose?
I'm planning to post this to my blog later in the week, but I thought I would share early with this community. Here is some thoughts about how to decide whether to create a Team Site or a Communication Site in SharePoint online.
If you decide a Communication Site is the way to go, check out these tips for getting started with Communication Sites.

Hi, Susan.
Will it be possible to escalate/copy an item or post from a Team Site (private/public) into a Communication Site?
There are situations where teams may work on something that requires collaboration (or review) first before it can be communicated to the entire organization.
Thanks,
- Sounds like a perfect opportunity to use Microsoft Flow!
- Ivan54Bronze ContributorGood work - for most this will the be first level of organization.
I'm struggling way more on the concept of storing content either centralized or decentralized, and naming concepts.
Stuff like, how do I name the internal IT TeamSite vs. the open IT Communication Site. Or when is the tipping point reached to move policies and procedures to a central "Policies and Procedures" Communication Site vs. a decentralized approach where every departmental communication site has a "policies" and "procedures" library.- Dean_GrossSilver Contributor
I spent a long time on a Policies and Procedures project for a large world wide organization. We decided to create a central P and P site for the approved and published content and to use a working site for drafts and collaboration. These type of documents belong to the corp and not to the departments. Departments come and go during reorgs, the centralized site provided that company a better long term solution that helped to ensure a consistent implementation accross multiple business units.
- Fred YIron ContributorHi, Dean.
Just to clarify, did you mean spinning up a working site for a policy/procedure in draft and closing it out once it is completed?
I agree, approved copies should be available at the corp level.
- Great stuff as always Sue. Nice job!
How about addressing Publishing sites as well? Where do they fit in..?- Of course you know the answer, it depends! There are still plenty of things you can't do with Communication Sites without custom web parts so for now, there is a home for all types of sites. I think of publishing sites in the same "class" as Communication Sites but they are much more mature. If you want to delay scheduling of pages, have more control over branding, etc., you will still want to use Publishing Sites today. But, I can definitely see a way to integrate modern Comm Sites into an existing intranet based on the Publishing framework - especially for "fit for purpose" sites like a campaign, initiative, or a governance/training site where it is less important to have the global nav or custom branding. I don't think there is one best way or one right answer here. Every choice should be about the business problem, the user experience, and whether or not you have budget and resources for customization.
