SPF Fail for newly shared files?

Somewhere between May 5th and May 15th there was a change for the email notification that gets sent out to recipients upon sharing file from SharePoint Online.

Here's the previously sent out mail:

and a quote from the source

Received-SPF: Pass (protection.outlook.com: domain of sharepointonline.com
 designates 134.170.212.165 as permitted sender)
 receiver=protection.outlook.com; client-ip=134.170.212.165;
 helo=USR17186-266;

and here is a new one from May 15th and later:

Received-SPF: Fail (protection.outlook.com: domain of sharepointonline.com
 does not designate 52.232.126.143 as permitted sender)
 receiver=protection.outlook.com; client-ip=52.232.126.143;
 helo=RD0003FF3222F3;

The visual change is one thing and I don't mind particularly, except for the not proper wording "OneDrive", even though the file originated from an Office 365 Group / SharPoint Online.

What is more annoying is that the messages got stuck in our Quarantine as there seems to be a SPF fail somewhere. I'm certain that I haven't changed anything on our end (MX Records pointing onPrem). I'd like to know if anyone else is having the same experience?

  • Yeah, I can confirm that:

    Authentication-Results: spf=fail (sender IP is 52.169.67.105)
     smtp.mailfrom=sharepointonline.com; michev.onmicrosoft.com; dkim=none
     (message not signed) header.d=none;michev.onmicrosoft.com; dmarc=none
     action=none header.from=sharepointonline.com;
    Received-SPF: Fail (protection.outlook.com: domain of sharepointonline.com
     does not designate 52.169.67.105 as permitted sender)
     receiver=protection.outlook.com; client-ip=52.169.67.105;
     helo=RD0003FF263956;

    They havent added the sharepointonline.com ranges, but this is supposed to be only a temporary issue and should be resolved when they move to the new EWS-based method. Well, at least for users with ExO mailbox, that is. StephenRice should be able to confirm that.

  • Yeap...and we have been discussing it on the ODFB space :-)...basically no CC e-mail and new sharing e-mail look & feel
