Sharepoint Online Versioning not working

Apologies if this is not in the right place

We are running off the online version of sharepoint / O365 so everything links back to Onedrive and can be accessed anywhere.

We use a third party system for some of our jobs which are working drawings and as such can be saved potentially hundreds of times in the space of working through a job.

Our versioning quantities are set to 5000 for major and minor versions.

If I look at the version history of any job that I have been working on I will never see any more than 2 versions of the job (normally it is only 1) regardless of how many times I have saved the job while working on it, this applies from the desktop or through the Sharepoint online portal.

Am I doing something wrong or does versioning simply not work for that particular file type ?
