Do you mean to open in the browser? I'm not sure this is documented, but basically is not just a question of SharePont itself, but of the file viewer that is part of SharePoint and ODFB. Hi,
I mean to open the file in the client application. For example, when we open a word file in Sharepoint, Word application launches. Does this only happen for applications under the Office suite? Or should all Microsoft applications be launched if we click the associated file in sharepoint?
- Sep 07, 2018Now I understand and you can expect that only Office documents (bear in mind the document library has to be configured to open files in client application as default setting) and maybe PDF ones to be opened in the client desktop apps

I believe it is only Office files and not PDF.
Edge browser do support some editing of .pdf (adding of notes). But Edge cannot save file changes back to SharePoint library so the user needs to save locally and then upload.
And on this topic I put my vote on https://sharepoint.uservoice.com/forums/329214-sites-and-collaboration/suggestions/12336546-open-adobe-pdf-in-client-application
