SharePoint Group vs. Azure AD Group
Our company wanted us to start creating/using Azure AD groups in SharePoint. Is there best practices on directly granting permission to AAD groups vs continue creating and granting permissions to SharePoint Groups (with AAD groups as members of SP groups)? The latter sounds like more work but not sure which one is best practice.
Tamras1972 You can use Azure AD groups without any problems to grant permissions in SharePoint. Also, Azure AD and Microsoft 365 groups are supported in SharePoint audience targeting but not the SharePoint groups.
Managing SharePoint groups particular to site is easy if you assign group/site owner respective to that site department. It might be difficult to manage Azure AD groups in case same group is used in multiple sites. So, you may need to plan accordingly to create Azure AD groups for specific site and specific roles/permissions.
Both have their pros and cons. Go through below links which will help you to understand it better:
- Groups in Microsoft 365 and Azure, and Which is Right for You
