SharePoint 'Get A Link' bug?

We have documents within SharePoint Online which are shared using the 'Get a Link'-functionality. When we disable the option 'Allow members to share the site and individual files and folders' within the site where the documents are stored, the 'Guest Access' links doesn't work anymore and we get the error 'Link is removed'!

We also noticed that the 'Get a Link'-options are different when this checkbox is enabled or disabled.

We thought that this checkbox only does something for members (with contribute) permissions on the site and that Owners are still able to create Guest links?

But disabling this option also disables this for Owners AND all guestlinks created in the past won't work anymore, is this 'by design' or a bug?

'Allow members to share..' option within site.

'Get a Link'-option with 'Allow members to share' activated.

'Get a Link'-option with 'Allow members to share' not activated. Even for Owners!!

  • It is by design.

Disabling that option in Access Requests means basically that inheritance cannot be broken "automatically" and/or by non-owners.

In "Get a link", every type of link diferent from "Restricted link" does break inheritance when used, adding "automatically" new permissions to the item. This is the reason why such links get disabled.

Owners, though, can still break inheritance, inviting explicitly other users or adding manually permissions.

Thanks for your replies Salvatore BiscariAsish Padhy!

The reason I would like to disable this option is because only Key-users/Site owners should be able to manage the permissions on their sites/documents. Key users/Site Owners have the best overview of what content may be accessed by whom. If also members are able to share content with everybody else in the organization, it will become a mess because of the permission inheritance being broken.

A customer I'm currently working for has this option enabled on all sites. But when I'll disable this option, all links sent to users in the past won't work anymore, so this will have a lot of impact..

Was hoping that guest links created in the past were still working and that members were only not able to create new guest links (or share content with other users) after that option was disabled. But that doesn't seems to be the case, all links are broken..

There is no difference between "old" and "new" links: when used by some new user they break inheritance adding new permissions.

Hence they are disabled to honor the Access Request option that has been unchecked.

Hi Ralfh, I suppose that is the intent of the option, so if it is removed the guest links will not work. Yeah, the term - "members" is misleading but as I read, it means all members including owners. Would be interested to know the case for which site owners would be allowed to share but not members? The security breach impact would be same in both cases. Thanks, Asish
