SharePoint Admin Questions, for SharePoint Online.

Hey Guys,

Hoping you can help me out here. I am trying to better understand how the SharePoint admin center is laid out. Speaking about site collections. (apologies for the list of questions, just trying to better understand).

If you see at the top there https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com / Is that considered my default sharepoint site? what is that for exactly?

All of the collections under sites? are those separate site collections sitting under the parent URL of /Sites/ ? I think so i just want to make sure. or are they thier own site collections? (It seems like it,

When i create a new site using the "Create Site" button it goes under /Sites/ Is that how its supposed to be?

I have been creating subsites in my https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/MyTestSite/TestSite2 etc. is that correct or is this site: https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com / supposed to be left as is and not used for production?

Also are all "Sites" considered subsites of an existing site collection?

THanks.

Robert

  • Hello Robert,

    Welcome to SharePoint World...

If you see at the top there https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com / Is that considered my default sharepoint site? what is that for exactly?

This is the default/ root site collection under which you would create your team sites, department sites etc.,

All of the collections under sites? are those separate site collections sitting under the parent URL of /Sites/ ? I think so i just want to make sure. or are they thier own site collections? (It seems like it,

Yes,  all of those sitting under / sites  are separate sites collections , similarly /Hub is a separate site collection under portal,  Search is a separate site collection under root.

When i create a new site using the "Create Site" button it goes under /Sites/ Is that how its supposed to be?

I assume you mean to say you are creating a new site collection . You can choose to create under / Sites  (which is the top one in the drop down list) or /Teams

Also are all "Sites" considered subsites of an existing site collection?

Yes all the sites that you create under site collections are considered subsites

    Hope this helps

Thanks Thuyavan! That helps a little. The confusion between sites, site collections and subsites has been difficult for me to clear up. There seems to be about 57 answers to the differences between the 3.

I just created a site under teams/ now I realize from your answer that i can create a site collection under either Teams or Sites, but is there a difference? Would communication sites be better suited to go under /teams ? etc.

Also, as a SharePoint consultant, would you tell a customer to use the default root site? in my case https://<tenantname>.sharepoint.com/ or would advise them to create site collections a new, and then start from there?

      Thanks,
      Robert

        - No difference its just a logical grouping ... all teams sites under /teams all and all project sites under /sites ... based on the site collection template you can tag your sites ...

Also, as a SharePoint consultant, would you tell a customer to use the default root site? in my case https://<tenantname>.sharepoint.com/ or would advise them to create site collections a new, and then start from there?

Based on my knowledge , it doesn't matter whether you are using default root site collection or any other site collection for your sites, the default root site collection its just another site collection that's all. One thing is, its a default site collection and it has team site template. I wouldn't recommend changing into a communication sites template nor deleting and recreating the root site collection even though its possible technically

I would suggest to create all your needs under \sites so that you can maintain uniform structure across your site collections

        Hope this helps!
        Thanks,

  • /sites is basically just a site collection path I forget the technical term of it but your sites under it are site collections not subsites. The sites your creating in sites can be viewed in the new SharePoint admin center which you can click in top right corner this will have your active sites which are all the /sites and other modern site collections etc.

The existing root URL is just a root site collection that is listed because it’s a classic site collection as any other old school site collections might show in the old admin center.

Is it still referred as Host Named Site Collections (HNSC)?

I agree in using the SharePoint Admin Center Preview (see Active sites link) since it displays the list of Modern site collections correctly.

      • No, it's not Host Named Site Collections (HNSC)...HNSC is more for onprem and allows you to setup different URLs for a Site Collection withouth having to touch the AAM (Alternate Access Mappings)...this concept is not available in SPO. Just remember in SPO we deal with a SPO tenant and then Site Collections created in the tenant. You should work with site collections and leav (if possible) the pattern of creating subsites under a site collection
