Share Folder on Sharepoint Online Site with Internal User Not Entire Site

I have a site with a ubnch of folders.  I want to share a single folder with a user.  SP allowed me to do so by setting share to a specific person, searching their name (they exist on our AD Azure) then sending the link.

The user was not allowed to access the folder and was instead prompted with a message saying they need to request access and an email was sent to me, which I approved.  However, this now gives the user access to the ENTIRE site and all folders and files in the document library.

Why doesn't the sharing of a single folder in SP Online not work the same as OneDrive?  I'm not doing this with an external user.  When I share a single folder, this does not then give a user access to my whole OneDrive site, so why is SP doing this?

  • From the sounds of it, you are sending people to the site instead of using the URL from the Sharing link that you generated for the folder. Users cannot just go to the site another way then navigate to the folder and access it until after they access the generated URL from the share link, which will add permissions.

Another issue I've seen is people will click share type in the address of the individuals, then those people will then be IM or sent seperately a URL copy from a folder from the URL bar, which won't work either, but there is a number of variables that could have happen.

The best way to give access to internal users individually IMO is not to use sharing, but use the manage access link on the folder as shown. This will apply direct permission to the folder and bypass any need for generated links. It will also allow those individuals to get to the site in another way and only see the folders they have access too assuming that is desired result.
