Great, that does the trick. This shows me the search functionality is capable of doing what I want it to do.
Any idea if we can make this happen without having to type * ?

Hi Amit,
It's possible to perform part word searches from the home page of each site as well as the Office 365 home.
It is still not possible to search for part words from the document library itself, I have still not seen any information on why this is the case, it does not seem logical to me,
If anything I would have thought it would be the other way round. Part word searches would take up more processing power if performed across all document libraries from the homepage, rather than just one. So I am assuming it's not a bandwidth based decision.
