Restrict Edit access on columns on user/group basis.

We have an urgent requirement where we want a few columns in a list to be get modified only by certain approved team members whereas rest of the fields open for modification by anyone who has access. We know, nothing is available out of the box; therefore we thought of testing this approach . But ,for some reason; this too didn’t work  . Has anyone tested this scenario before or has any suggestions ?
