Required columns and metadata

Good Day

We have found while testing the SharePoint Modern Team site that gets assigned to Microsoft TEAMS that columns we have created in the document library so that we can enforce the population of metadata as a file us uploaded or added to the library is being bypassed while the file being uploaded successfully and not being in a checked out state.  Even if we bypass the proper SharePoint site UI and use the TEAMs UI the same behavior is seen.   However, when we leverage a Modern Team Site not connected to an Office 365 Group or Microsoft TEAMs we dont see that behavior, giving us the expected result just as in classic team sites where enforced metadata or required columns forces you in getting those populated before the file is fully uploaded/made available to everyone (not checked out). Not sure f anyone has come across this scenario before but its odd not having the same SharePoint behavior when dealing with a SharePoint site that is tied to TEAMs.

  • Juan is right here. The new Modern Library doesn't require checkout or force metadata, and provides the "Files that need attention" view so that files missing metadata can be addressed. This was done because too many people lost files and had so many issues with files sitting checked out and never checking in so they decided to allow it anyway so the files is still there but raise awareness to the missing metadata. I personally like the new way.

Anyway, this is working by design and is not related to Teams or anything else other than modern UI library.
  • AFAIK, in the modern experience no matter the site type, metadata is never enforced when uploding files so not sure why you have a site where is happening just the opposite

Hello! Maybe your first sentence was a bit long. Try to separate each issue you want to explain. Otherwise me and others have no clue how to help you. Keep it simple and smart. Greets, Eva
