This typically occurs automatically when the web app is created for the personal sites, if you follow the instructions at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee624362.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 you will achieve your goal.
Hello Dean, I can't see any specific configuration of web application in this article. What you are probably referring to is creating new profile service application, or? But this is not an option for me since I need existing user profiles to remain.
