Prevent Online-Only Files becoming Locally Available

Hi all,

My small business is using SharePoint to collaboratively work on files together. We are having the folders sync to our Windows Explorer.

I'm looking for all files to be made as 'online-only' and not convert to locally available. I notice that when we open an 'online-only' file it turns into a 'locally-available' file with a green tick.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening? I don't want any files to be saved locally for security reasons.

When a users opens a Word file via Windows Explorer (uses OneDrive for Business Client) that file is stored on the local computer system. One way to make sure the file is only kept for a limited amount of time is to configure Storage Sense link (Windows only). This can be configured to keep files 1 day, 1 week, ..
Note: it is a local configuration and users may disable it if they have sufficient permissions

Completely reducing the exposure to 0 is not possible using this approach. Another approach is to use 3rd party apps that mimic Windows Explorer (see here and here (browser-based).

It is possible to complete reduce exposure using AIP. Even if document are stored on local computers and the device is stolen the documents are save. This approach requires special licenses and is complex to implement. Use common sense and procedures if possible.
