Prevent Communication Sites?
Hi
In our company, we have a policy to only allow Communication sites if they are part of our intranet. Our reason is: If you need to communicate broadly, then use our intranet.
So, my question is: is it possible to restrict creation of Communication sites and only enable it to members of a specific group?

Hi JakobRohde
Yes, it is possible to restrict the creation of Communication sites and limit it to members of a specific group in SharePoint. SharePoint offers various permissions and site creation settings that can help you achieve this.
Here's a step-by-step guide to preventing Communication sites creation for all users except members of a specific group:
Create a Security Group: Start by creating a security group in Azure Active Directory or your organization's directory service. Add the members to this group who should have permissions to create Communication sites.
Disable Communication Site Creation for Everyone: By default, SharePoint allows all users to create Communication sites. You will need to change this setting to restrict site creation.
- Go to the SharePoint admin center (https://yourdomain-admin.sharepoint.com/).
- Click on "Settings" in the left navigation menu.
- Under "Site Creation," select "Hide the Create site command."
- Save your changes.
Allow Communication Site Creation for the Specific Group: Now, you need to grant site creation permission to the security group you created earlier.
- In the SharePoint admin center, click on "Active sites."
- Select "Settings" from the top menu, and then click on "Site creation."
- Choose "Only users in the selected security group can create sites."
- Enter the name of the security group you created and click "Save."
With these settings in place, only the members of the specified security group will have the ability to create Communication sites. Other users will no longer see the option to create Communication sites, effectively preventing them from doing so.
It's essential to regularly review the members of the security group and ensure that only authorized personnel have access to create Communication sites. Additionally, communicate this policy clearly to all employees so they understand the guidelines for site creation on your intranet.

A million thanks! Just to be clear: Users will still be able to create team sites, right? It is only Communication Sites we need to restrict.Unless you deploy a Self Service site creation utility where you dictate how sites are going to be created including the base site type (communication site vs team site) there is not a way to prevent some users to create communication sites but allow them to create Team sites
