Our external user has 2 emails (Hotmail email + Work email), how SharePoint handle this
Hi All,
Last week i shared a site with a new external user using his work email address such as "A.B@externalorg.com". and today i have noted that the user has his account created inside Office 365 active users and guest accounts. but seems there are 2 email addresses created for this external user inside our office 365; one is his "work email" which i shared the site with it + the other is his Hotmail account. as follow:-
1. When i access "Office 365" >> "Active users", i got his Hotmail account (such as "A_B_hotmail#EXT#@ourorg.com"), and not his work email which i shared the site with him.. as follow:-
2. While when i access "Office 365" >> "Guest users", i got his work email (A.B@ExternalOrg.com) which i shared the site with, as shown below ( Also his Hotmail account is NOT mentioned inside the "Guest users"):-
So i got confused on what is going on. now if i check the user's permission on the site i will get the same result (that the user is added to the group which i shared with him), when using his work email "A.B@ExternlaOrg.com" OR when using his username which is shown inside the "Active user" ("A_B_hotmail#EXT#@ourorg.com") , as follow:-
but if i select the external user inside the group and i click on "Email users" >> then i will get his work email A.B@externalorg.com inside my outlook email window's To field :-
so can anyone help me in understanding what is going on?
For example could this be the scenario:-
1. when i shared the site with the external user using his work email "A.B@externalorg.com" >> the user open the email and click on the site link >> since he is a new user to our tenant >> he was asked to chose which email to use for login >> and the user chose to login using his Hotmail account.
so now the user need to access the site using his Hotmail account, while his email address inside our tenant is his work email "A.B@externlaorg.com", since we shared the site with this email? so he login using his Hotmail account , but if someone wants to email him (by selecting his username inside a group), then the email will got to his work email address (the email we shared the site with)??

- I would recommend to check here in Azure AD if you have "two guest" accounts for that user...my guess is that you only have one and you are simply seeing two different views of the same guest user. If your external user is using his/her corporate e-mail, he probably created at some point a MSA account and that's why it looks like a "hotmail" account

As mentioned in my question, when i checked the guest accounts from "Office 365" >> "Guests" I can see that there is only one new guest account created, containing the work email (where the Hotmail account is not mentioned inside the "Office 365" >> "Guests"). and if i checked the user permission on the site which i shared with the external users i will get the same result, if i type the work email @ "A.B@ExternlaOrg.com" OR if i type his username @ ("A_B_hotmail#EXT#@ourorg.com"), so this means we are talking about the same external user.
- You are correct in your thinking. When an invite for access goes out to an email address if you are logged in with another Microsoft account when accessing that resource it will associate it with the account you sent the email too in AzureAD. I really wish it didn’t but it does :). You basically would have to delete the guest account and do another invite having the user make sure they are logged into the right account when they accept.
I usually tell folks to right click, copy and paste into incognito browser when having this issue.
