Open PDF in Word Online (o365)?

Is it still possible to open PDFs in SharePoint in Word Online (based on a direct URL) for online browser viewing.  I thought you used to be able to do this, but now I cant find any kind of url/option to do it.

Not in Word Online, AFAIK. You can open a PDF in the SharePoint viewer (clicking on it) or in the browser (selecting the PDF and choosing Open in the action bar).

Not sure to understand your problem... If the PDF is in a generic website, it should open directly in the browser; if it is in SharePoint, see above.

Along same lines, our school posts an updated PDF of our daily high school announcments on the school web site. In order to get an browser-based inline PDF viewer, I have to to use Google! http://docs.google.com/a/troyusd.org/viewer?url=www.troyusd.org/pages/downloads/DailyBulletin.pdf

Similarly, our lunch meal provider, has an automatically generated PDF version of our monthly building menues. In order to give our patrons a browswer based view of those, I also have to use the Google viewer. http://docs.google.com/a/troyusd.org/viewer?url=http://www.opaaschoolmenus.com/menu/student/Troy%20USD%20429%20-%20Grade%20School/cur/

I can do this with Microsoft Live viewer only for Office format files (DOC, XLS, PPT) but not PDF. As Office 365 has the ability to view PDFs in the browser, why not enable the direct link viewer to also display PDFs???
