Open in Desktop App is failing for Word for some users on some machines

pnthrzrule does your libraries have custom mandatory metadata? Not sure if related because of the results of your tests but the word sharepoint properties add-on is not working and making word crash since last week.
It will automatically try to open when there is an empty mandatory custom column. If Word is starting properly when you open a document having custom metadata, go into word "Display" menu, you will find a SharePoint section with "Properties". Click on it to see if Word will crash.
