No ribbon in classic view

Hi folks,

I want to check in and check out several files at the same time in SharePoint. Since this is not possible in the new view, I returned to the old view as suggested in Microsoft's documentation.

But: In the old view, the menu on the left side is missing (just the search box, everything below is blank) and the ribbon itself is completely missing. Just the Name of the document library, the + New, Upload, Sync... buttons and the actual files, but that's it. So it has even less funcionality than the new SharePoint look. How can I get back the ribbon in the classic view? Sharepoint is pretty much useless in this state.
