NAS or large file solutions

We would like to implement SharePoint online for a client but have a few concerns.

1. while most files they will sync are 10 MB or less, we do have a lot of 150MB CAD files, as I understand it the OneDrive Sync client uploads those files via the WAN and then they are downloaded the same way to other users in the firm.  This seems to be very inefficient from a bandwidth standpoint since nothing is going over the LAN.  As a result i was looking for some sort of hybrid solution.  I know there are other products out there that allow a NAS on prem that syncs to a cloud file management system.  Does SP have a similar option?

2. how reliable is the 'map drive' option vs the OD sync client.  we might have 500+ GB of files and don't need everything synced locally.

map drive, as it works now, is simply horrible..and unusable. Use the sync client, and if you have  Windows 10 Fall Creators you have also the benefit of Files On Demand.

  • My approach on this for customers i work with in an engineering or media production space is as Dean advised. As these files are being worked on, syncing them provides little benefit as you cant collaborate together on the files as the application doesn't support partial file updates like office does. Mapping a drive is not a good idea as it looses the authentication token each day and won't will get issues with multiple people opening the same file as users will overwrite each others work.
In most cases the need to store CAD and media in SharePoint is to publish for review or approval or review in a PDF or other suitable format.

In my experience, CAD files typically have links to other files and you get much better performance and reliability with local file shares for those type of files.

yes, that is our concern, I have used https://www-avl.egnyte.com/netgear/?georedirect=true for other clients and they really like it.  I was hoping a similar option would work for SharePoint.
