Modern Comments and Requiring Check Out

So, I'm 95% sure I have the answer, but hoping someone can confirm.

I have a document library where Require Check Out is turned on. Users have complained that the @Mention functionality isn't working.

I understand that comments will not send notifications whilst checked out. To confirm, is it also true that the comments will not trigger notifications on check-in?
