Missing sites under Destinations when I try to move or copy files in modern library
- Feb 15, 2019
Jan Andreas Knudsen I don't believe there is another way except to "Follow" the site prior to the copy / move operations.
Norm
1. Open the destination site (that you want to move things to) through the account that you want to move the items with.
2. Open any of the libraries (I use Documents since it's ubiquitous)
3. Drag a test file into it to "upload" it there.
4. Go back to your source site and try the move operation again. The destination site should now show up under "Recent".
I've been hitting my head against this for a few hours now, and this is the most reliable way that I've been able to find.
Good luck!
Y_Svesh Thank you very much for this workaround. It worked for me.
At least now there is a way to get the site into the recent sites.
But for the bigger picture: We are in April of 2022 and this feature is still flawed. You only get a a small sample size of sites you recently worked on. Not even all the sites you are following..
That is very frustrating to say the least. I hope this will get fixed in an future update.
- LisaJo48May 02, 2022Iron ContributorIt's ironic that after all this time, I am having to search for a solution because I am flabberguasted that it is still not. I thought I was just being a stupid user for not seeing the way to do this. I don't get why the list of locations to move a file to isn't a list of all the sites to which the user has access. Seems pretty obvious and straightforward.
- rgaronJun 22, 2022Copper ContributorHere is another weird workaround that worked for one of our client. It seems there is something odd with Microsoft permissions when making a user an owner on a site. It will mess up search results, essentially not show all results and also mess up move and copy to locations where it will not show the sites where the users are solely owners of the site. The fix. Go to advanced permissions (old school SP permissions), go to the members and add the owners individually there as well. Wait 15-20 mins, should now see the sites in the copy to.
- Ben_McInerneyMay 25, 2022Copper ContributorI think that this is because Microsoft is taking the perspective that a user may have 100's of sites they can access (in a big organisation) so that would unduly clutter the list.
But I totally agree - at the cost of having an unusable "tool" this is a ridiculous approach.- jameshickey1140Jul 06, 2022Brass Contributor
I am in an organization that has 100's of sites and I would rather have all the sites displayed than only a handful. Even if I had to scroll to the site, it would be faster than what we have to do now. The plain and simple solution would be to have a search bar at the top and provide access to all sites the user has permissions for in the move and copy to functions. For me, following a site is hit or miss in regard to whether it shows up and even going to the site a number of times does not always bring it to the available options either. A co-worker and I spent 20 minutes trying to get a site to come up today under the move to options (thus why I am here). We tried following it, visiting it a number of times and even opening a DL in the site. It finally showed up for me, but not for my co-worker.
It appears from the user side that a seemingly simple task has been overly complicated by a feature that is supposed to make it easy to find your sites.Edit: I just found that if you pin the site, it is available in list, however, our users don't always know they will be needing to move files to a particular site, so this is not a very good option for us. Not to mention, pinning that many sites would make it difficult for the user to find the sites that were important to them.

LisaJo48 I was able to use a workaround. Still annoying as I had to re-enable the user and login as them via SharePoint, but I navigated to the folder I wanted to move content to and "Added as a Shortcut" to the user's OneDrive. Then when I chose "Move To" I clicked the shortcut of the root drive (or exact location) and moved them there. The shortcut brought me right to where was needed, which was not showing up in the recents or "show more".
Hope this helps!
