Lookup columns not working in classic any longer?

For existing as well as new SharePoint Online lists I noticed that our lookup columns are not displayed any more on the  NewForm.aspx & EditForm.aspx in classic mode. However, the lookup values are displayed in the modern view on the forms. It happens for lists that have been created months ago as well as for new lists. This is bizarre. Has anyone also experienced this? Thanks.
