Keeping URLs when migrating from on premise SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint Online

During a migration study (SharePoint 2019 vs Online) we received the question if it's possible to keep the same URLs for sites and documents when migrating content to SharePoint Online ?

In an on premise context it's possible, but can it also be done in O365 with network and tenant configuration ?

Thank you very much!

  • Unfortunately not. SharePoint Online is a global service and you will use your tenant name and sharepoint.com to access all of your site collections. For example: [tenant].sharepoint.com/sites/[site collection]

You can create Office Smart Links to bypass the home realm discovery and send a user along to a specific site collection. For instance intranet.[yourdomain].com can send them to [tenant].sharepoint.com/site/intranet. There is quite a bit to smart links, so be sure to read up on them at http://www.enowsoftware.com/solutions-engine/using-smart-links-to-improve-the-login-process-to-office-365-applications.

Thank you Scott and Juan Carlos for your answers. We'll look further into the possibilities with relative paths and smart links.
