Keep column defaults for a library template?

We have a document library template that has a standard folder structure to it.  We also apply managed metadata to that folder structure. When we save the list as a template, we can keep the folder structure (keep the content), but not the defaults. Aside from powershell, any other options for ensuring we can keep those defaults?
