Item Count fiasco!

Has anyone found a way to get a count of all items within folder including subfolders ?

I understand it will show me items count on a folder but it will not include items that are within subfolders of that folder...WHAT!? 

Sorry, rant over.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to achieve this let me know please.

I am looking for a solution that can become a column within library not a PowerShell or C# solutions.
