    Hi Carolina,

Assuming you are using SharePoint Online and not SharePoint On-Premise.  If you are using SharePoint Online and depending on the template that your root site collection was created with, you may see "Site Pages" within your "Site Contents".  If you do:

    1. Go to the SharePoint ribbon and click Items
    2. Click the drop-down arrow under "New Document" and choose "Site Page"
    3. Create your new page. You will see this is the new Modern Page styling.
    4. Once done, go to the "Site Pages" library.  Assuming the Site Pages in the Mdern UI styling, click the 3 dots next to the page you want to make your home page and choose "Check In"
    5. Click the 3 dots again and choose "Make Homepage"

There are a few scenarios in which you might not have Site Pages or you might not have the modern UI enabled, but the above should get the job done if everything is set up right.

    • You cannot convert the root site into a modern SPO site if this is what you are asking for. But what you can do, as advised by Joel, is to use modern features in the root site: modern pages, modern webparts, modern lists and document libraries, etc.
