How can I stop a user from resharing a document if they have Edit access on that item?

I want to share a document with someone in my organization and give them Edit access, but I also want to prevent that user from sharing the file with anyone else (within organization).

Below solutions are not applicable to me

  • Use site or library‑level settings to block members from sharing and only owners can share.
    • This solution is not applicable to us.
  • Use Sensitivity Labels or Purview policies to restrict resharing.
    • We don't have Purview

Yeah this is one of those SharePoint things that should be simpler than it is. Go to your site settings > Site Permissions > change the sharing settings to "Only site owners can share files, folders, and the site." That prevents editors from resharing. The downside is it applies to the whole site, not just one doc. For a single file, the closest workaround is using sensitivity labels through Purview if you have the licensing for it. Not ideal but its the most granular control you'll get right now.

The only option I can think of off the top of my head would be to create a share link from a OneDrive account such as a service account instead of SPO directly. That way you can share the file with specific people (the user(s) you want to grant "edit" access) and prevent them from sharing the file with anyone else since you have only added them to the file? Hopefully this helps?
