Header area for Modern Pages
Why is the header so tall and empty? I know that with Delve blogs there is place for a background image and in fact is sort of expected. But I don't see the same facility for SP Modern Pages.
Am I missing something?

There are now some great layout options to manage the header / page title space for modern pages in SharePoint online!
Configure the Title Region – SharePoint Modern Pages
These options are way more aesthetically pleasing then they were a few months ago. I am sure we will continue to see future updates as well.
Indeed. A lot of big improvements to the design of pages since I first asked this question in 2016.

I have the new editing features on my dev tenant but they have not made it to my employers tenant just yet.
These are great features, love the new column templates and the ability to change the header image
But! Modern pages are still unusable for my employer.
There is no way to scale the header image, therefore your images are set to fit the space and this destroys the resolution, hope this is changed before the final release.
We still need the ability to either remove the header and shrink the white space, you can choose to not have an image but it still leaves a big gap between the Page Title and the Page Body.
Users do not like a lot of white space between these elements.

Microsoft
Hi - definitely hear your feedback on a need for more customizations (specifically removing the title region) on pages. We are currently looking into more title layouts to support more scenarios and make pages look great.
Could you explain the scenario where you'd want to remove the title region all together? Would love to hear your feedback so we know what to work on!

Hi Alyssa,
This morning I see that the white space is greatly reduced in my dev tenant, if I delete the background image, this is great. My employers site does not have this ability yet, but when this is rolled out I think this will be more acceptable to my co-workers.
Sorry I was not more clear on the Title region, I was referring more to the white space and background image being so large, but now that the space is reduced, I still have to get feedback from my boss and coworkers but I don't see this as big an issue for us anymore.
Thank you
- Andrew SilcockSteel ContributorAgreed, despite removing the grey banner there's still quite a big gap! Would also love to see no gap.

Agreed - the massive header is very frustrating. Any update on timing to either allow users to edit the size or a reduction in the template would be great!
- Rodney CraigoBrass ContributorAgreed, this is first thing my users see and the number one complaint.
This should either be removed entirely or be customizable. - Sally SchmidtCopper Contributor
I just added this to User Voice - please vote it up! Modern Pages - Too Big Header

Here is another workaround - Modern site page with out fat banner
- Eric SchraderBrass ContributorJust copy home.aspx. genius!
If you are comfortable deploying a temporary work-around, you could use Mikael Svenson web part: http://www.techmikael.com/2017/03/my-dont-do-it-modern-page-header.html

Thanks Paul. I like everything that the workaround can do. I'm just not comfortable/knowledgeable on how to get that workaround working.
Do you know if MS has plans to release something similar soon?

Any update on this yet? This huge white-space is just plain ugly, or at least let users be able to change the banner image. Overall the so-called modern pages and libraries style is so unpolished and looks unclean and far away from the neatness of classic look.
- I have no heard any news about this what seems not to be good :-(

Eager to hear the reply from MS on this? I want to use Modern pages for my clients but the first question I hear is "can we change that background image or remove it altogether?"
- Dean_GrossSilver Contributor
Good question. I'd love to hear an answer from the MS UX design experts. danholme or Mark-Kashman can you please have someone provide us some insight about the UX goals.
- DeletedPersonally this doesn't surprise me all that much after Microsoft went all in with white space in SP2013. The scaled back a bit, but not a whole lot. They can fix it, but if it's a big fix, I'd rather they spent their energies on more important/annoying glitches/feature requests.
