Gallery view in document library for non thumbnail supported file types using image upload metadata

So we work with files that are cad files and do not have a supported thumbnail. So we use an uploaded image in the file properties which shows in an image column when looking in list view. When I change the view to gallery it shows a icon blank page file and no image? Incidentally if I do the exact same thing in a list you get a nice gallery using the image column of images added to the list item. We cant use a list for what we need though. I basically want the gallery view to be forced to use the attached image metadata over the autogenerated thumbnail can anyone help? (using sharepoint online)
