Documents reverting back to old modified dates

Hi,

I've been informed by members of a department that a couple of Word Documents have reverted back to an old modified date  (02/08/2023).  They advise that amendments have been made since the date??

I've checked version history and it's only showing the one date. also checked within the Recycle bin on  SharePoint site and One Drive.

Firstly - is this possible and as anyone else had this issue?

Secondly - if it is possible how would I retrieve the previous versions??
