Document Library column data disappearing when opening the file in the desktop

Hello,

Very weird and frustrating issue here. 

Whenever a document is opened with the desktop app, one of the metadata columns (multi-select choice column) loses all data and does not update version history. 

It is immediately losing the data in just this one column, no editing the document, no checking it out or in. It is immediately lost when the document is opened. 

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I have no idea why this is happening.
