Create list from Excel export - causes Errors within Sharepoint - Who can help?

Hello Community,

I wanted to create a list within Sharepoint (Office 365 E3). Background: The data for the list was already there in various Excel sheets.

My first approach: Copy and paste of contents to sharepoint didn't work at all - even when I created I list within Sharepoint with the same columns.

My second approach: Create a consolidated list in Excel first and then export to Sharepoint. It seems to work out in the first place, but then I discovered three problems:

  • When opening the list in standard view, as well as in new created views >> the list was already in quick edit mode, always)
  • The list appears in the website content properly, but it is not selectable as a webapp when creating/editing a page within the same Sharepoint site.
  • The biggest issue: The list isn't detected as a regular list within the Sharepoint IOS app. The only way to open it on mobile device is by navigating via the quick links - then however, there is no possibility to add new items to that list.

These issues seems to stem from a different handling of lists created within sharepoint vs. lists exported to sharepoint. Any help?

Let's take a look at the copy/paste method for a minute. Could you elaborate on how the copy/paste method didn't work? If you were trying to copy/paste a large amount of items (like several hundred at a time), I know from personal experience that this can cause SharePoint to just hang forever, especially if your table has a lot of fields.  If you haven't already, try copy/pasting a hundred or so records at a time.

I've no idea why your list created from an imported Excel sheet behaves that way, so I'm crossing my fingers for you that the copy/paste situation is salvageable.

Thanks Matt for your response. I tried the copy and paste option with my client's Sharepoint on premise solution - there it works. But not with my Office 365.

Attached a short demonstraion. when trying to paste, simply nothing happens :-)
