Content Type Gallery: Unexpected Error for document template
I created a document library for templates and linked it to my hub site. Then, I created a custom content type in the admin center.
After uploading a Word template to the library, I tried to associate the URL of the template with my custom content type. However, I encountered the following error:
"An unexpected error has occurred. Please try again later."
Here’s what I’ve tried so far to resolve the issue:
- Adjusted the file format from .dotx to .docx
- Shortened the URL to just the tenant address + filename + file format
Despite these efforts, the issue persists. Has anyone encountered a similar problem or have any suggestions for resolving this?

Not sure what changed in the year that i was out of the SharePoint Admin scene, but I am now having the same problem when trying to create a global content type in the admin centers content type gallery. In the past I successfully created several CTs in the CTG and was able to link to documents stored in different site collections throughout the tenant. A site level CTG has the requirement for the url to be within the current site collection and using the Content Type Hub also had the same requirement. When the Content Type Galleries were introduced it allowed for using templates throughout the tenant, improving on the features of the Content Type Hub. I am now trying to set up several new global content types for use across several different hub sites and the publishing of the CTs was successful and added to multiple document libraries but when we went back in to add the template urls, we got the same error as above. I am not sure what changed in the last year, is there now a setting or feature that needs to be activated?

I have also struggled with this; anyone know of any specific documentation on how to correctly enter the URL and the site requirements for the source document library?
I know there are limitations with regards to where the source document library is. If I recall correctly it has to be in the same site or subsite of where the content type is created, meaning if I create the content type on a subsite, I can't use a link to a source document in a document library that is on another branch of the root site.
In theory there is a way to do this by using the Content Type Gallery so you can link to a source template file in any document library regardless of site structure, but I still fail on providing a valid link.
There is another thread on this topic, but it does not have a valid solution.
