Communication Site Issues

Hi,

 

We now have the ability to create Communications site on our tenant but the first impression is confusing. When I create a site based on topic or showcase template, the site displays correctly on my PC. 

 

If I view it with a test account (with visitor access) on A different PC, it looks like the quick launch bar is being drawn and there is a technical issue with the highlight content webpart that displays fine on my owner view. 

 

If I add my test account to the owners group the page still looks odd but the highlighted content just keeps updating.

  • Dhiran Gajjar - we found a different issue with highlighted content (HC) in some flighting scenarios and fixed it yesterday. Can you let us know if this also fixed the constantly loading situation you were encountering?

     

    If not, we'd love to get some additional detail, including a trace of the query and results, to see what's happening in your specific case.

     

    How to get the trace (assuming Windows):

    1. In Chrome browser, open the page with the oddity.
    2. Hit F12 to open developer tools
    3. Switch to the Network tab along the top
    4. You're looking for this call in the left hand window "

      RenderListDataAsStream?View=" [the trace we needs depends on the configuration in HC, but this is the default trace you want for Comm Sites Homepage]

    5. Once you select the call you want the info for, we need two pieces of information: the Request Payload & the Response)
    6. Let's grab them.
    7. With the call above selected, In the right window you'll see tabs across the top: Headers | Preview | Response | Cookies | Timing
    8. Start in Headers
    9. Scroll down and find Request Payload
    10. We want you to copy and paste that data.
    11. To do that you likely need to click "view source" See the GIF below
    12. Then double click the content to highlight it all, and copy it (Ctrl + C)
    13. Paste that into Notepad (or your email client)
    14. Now click the Response tab in that same right hand window
    15. Ctrl + A to select all, Ctrl + C to copy
    16. Paste that below in the notepad
    17. Now copy all of that info and send it to me via email please to John.Sanders@microsoft.com

  • Thanks for reporting this issue. We are actively investigating if this is due to flights not available for Test user with visitor access.

     

    Another thing that doesn't look right here is that Visitor User (View permissions) on the site should not see New button on the command bar. Can you please confirm that visitor user has only view permissions to site or added as contributor?

      Comms sites are looking a lot better this morning, looks like the rendering issues have been resolved, at least in the tenants I've checked this morning.

    Are both you and your test account on First Release? If not, I've had experiences with Modern sites where if a First Release user creates a page or something in a site, someone without First Release can see something different, and possibly vice-versa.

      Hi Matt Coats This could be a possibilty. I was testing this with a couple of users and the person who is not in the first release group saw the mis-aligned page.

    yeah a few threads reporting these issues with comms sites, they we're working fine for me last week so things are obviously happening behind the scenes.

    I know Microsoft will get away with it buy saying everything is "preview" but the quiet on all fronts is concerning...
