Hi grashuepfer,
as far as I know, t’s not supported to directly open .mht file stored in the SharePoint Online in the browser, the file needs to be downloaded first.
IE browser used to support opening MHT files directly.In order for Edge to open MHT files you may need to configure the following;
- Open Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.
- Click the Settings and More (ellipsis) button on the top-right corner.
- Select the Settings option.
- Click on Default browser.
- Under the “Internet Explorer compatibility” section, turn on the “Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode” toggle switch.
- Click the Restart button.
Here's what you can do next:
Access your SharePoint Online site with administrative privileges.
Navigate to the document library where you want to change the behavior for .mht files.
Click on the "Library" tab in the ribbon at the top of the page.
Select "Library Settings" from the ribbon.
Under the "General Settings" section, click on "Advanced settings."
Scroll down to the "Opening Documents in the Browser" section.
Choose the option that says "Open in the client application" instead of "Use the server default (Open in the browser)."
Save the changes.

We use a 3rd party browser app to access SharePoint Online and that supports opening mht files directly in the browser. Adding a 3rd party app to only fix the opening of mht problem can most likely not be justified.
