Outlook search opens attachments when I want it to open emails
Hi Community,
I have noticed recently that when I conduct a quick search, it returns attachments that relate to the search, which is great, but I want to open the email that the attachment is on and not the attachment its self. How can I change settings to do this?
See highlighted below, if I click on those attachments, I want to have the email open it is attached to and not directly open that attachment.

- Kenneth_BluestoneCopper ContributorHi neilosj,
I found your thread while looking for a better solution than the one I have currently, but by messing around, I've discovered that this can be achieved by first [Right-click]ing on the attachment result, and then hitting [Enter/Return].
I haven't yet found a way to do this via the keyboard only, nor even with the mouse only: You may think that [Right-click] followed by [Left-click] would work, but it does not. I'm sure there's another way, but the only way I know is [Right-click] followed by [Enter/Return]. Very odd.- Thanks for sharing a workaround.
Much appreciated.
Hi neilosj,
I am an independent advisor investigating your inquiry.
The good news is I was able to recreate your scenario. This issue says that Microsoft potentially had forgotten to show the corresponding email with the attachment in the search results.
I recommend two things.1) Contact and report this issue to the Microsoft Support team. They have direct access to the product engineers.
2) Add this issue and suggested solution to the Microsoft Outlook Feedback portal just in case this was by design. Personally, I will vote for this change. I want both options - the email and/or attachment in the search results. So, be sure to include the link to your feedback in this post.
If you find this information helpful, please mark it as the best answer or like it, which will assist others with the same question.
Have a good day.
